A One-Day Adventure High on the Moors

High on the Moors is a classic Yorkshire Dales route that delivers a full day of varied green-laning through some of the region’s most scenic and historic landscapes. Running in an almost circular loop, this rewarding route combines steady trails, technical climbs, water crossings and spectacular views for a well-balanced day of adventure from start to finish.

Our day begins at 9:00 AM in Askrigg, with the exact meeting location provided by email before the tour. From here, we head north onto a series of steady, flowing trails, giving everyone the chance to settle into the day and enjoy the early scenery before the terrain becomes more challenging.

The route soon leads us to the well-known Flemington Edge, a steep and rocky climb that is one of the real highlights of the trip. This section adds a satisfying challenge and gives the route its more adventurous character.

Continuing on, we tackle a number of water crossings, weather and conditions permitting, before stopping at a local café if you’d like to grab refreshments and take a short break.

From there, we work our way back south, passing near Catterick and entering an area rich in old mining history. Here, the character of the landscape begins to change, offering a different feel to the day as the lanes wind through terrain shaped by the area’s industrial past.

The adventure finishes at the beautiful Aysgarth Falls, providing a memorable end to a full day in the Yorkshire Dales. For those who want to finish with one last drive, there is also an optional final lane to round off the experience.
