Tour Preparation
Tour Preparation & Vehicle Requirements
Everything you need to know before joining a Timeless Overland guided 4x4 tour, green lane adventure or overland expedition.
Whether you're joining us for a day exploring the green lanes of the UK or embarking on a multi-day overland journey, ensuring your vehicle is prepared will help you get the most from your adventure.
Is My Vehicle Suitable?
Most standard 4x4 vehicles are suitable for our tours and adventures.
Popular vehicles regularly seen on our tours include:
- Land Rover Defender
- Land Rover Discovery
- INEOS Grenadier
- Toyota Land Cruiser
- Toyota Hilux
- Suzuki Jimny
- Ford Ranger
- Isuzu D-Max
- Mitsubishi Pajero
If you're unsure whether your vehicle is suitable for a particular tour, please get in touch and we'll be happy to advise.
Every tour is different, and specific vehicle requirements will always be listed within the tour description.
Minimum Vehicle Requirements
To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants, vehicles joining our tours must:
- Be fully road legal
- Have valid insurance
- Hold a valid MOT where applicable
- Be mechanically sound and well maintained
- Have a functioning four-wheel-drive system
- Carry a full-size spare wheel
Many of our routes utilise public roads and legal UK byways, so vehicles must be fully compliant with UK road regulations.
Tyre Requirements:
Tyres play a significant role in both safety and vehicle capability.
For most tours, we recommend all-terrain tyres as a minimum.
Some of our easier routes, particularly selected Shropshire tours, may be suitable for vehicles fitted with road tyres. If you're unsure whether your tyres are suitable, please contact us before booking.
We're always happy to discuss your vehicle setup and recommend any improvements if required.
Recovery Equipment & Support:
One of the benefits of joining a Timeless Overland guided 4x4 tour is knowing that support is always on hand should it be required.
Our experienced guides carry the appropriate recovery equipment for the routes and terrain we operate, meaning there is no need to invest in specialist recovery equipment before joining one of our tours.
Whether you're completely new to green laning or have years of off-road experience, our guides are there to provide advice, assistance and support throughout the day.
For more challenging tours or international overland expeditions, any additional vehicle recommendations or equipment requirements will be clearly communicated before departure.
Our goal is simple – to help you relax, enjoy the adventure and focus on exploring some of the UK's best green lanes and overland routes while we take care of the planning, guidance and support.
What Should I Bring?
To ensure you're comfortable throughout the day, we recommend bringing:
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Waterproof jacket
- Suitable footwear
- Food and refreshments
- Mobile phone charger
- Any personal medication
- Camera or drone (where permitted)
British weather can be unpredictable, so it's always best to come prepared.
Bespoke Tours & Specialist Vehicles
Not all adventures fit neatly into a standard category.
We regularly organise bespoke tours for owners of:
- Expedition trucks
- 4x4 camper conversions
- Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 conversions
- Military vehicle conversions
- Unimogs
- Other specialist off-road vehicles
If you have a unique vehicle or specific destination in mind, get in touch and we'll help create a tailored adventure to suit your requirements.
